A console table is often the first thing we see when walking into a home. Whether it’s placed in the entry, hallway or along a living room wall, the console table makes a lasting first impression. With that in mind, this valuable real estate should be utilised effectively.

BUILD INTEREST
Any stylist worth their salt knows the key to a successful style moment is incorporating objects of different heights and shapes to build depth and visual layers. Lamps, sculptures, books, trays, vessels and flowers are excellent options.

FIND BALANCE
Every vignette requires a sense of symmetry. Strike balance by arranging objects of height with care, placing them either in the centre or on both sides of your console, surrounded by objects at lower levels.

GET PERSONAL
Use your console table to make a statement by choosing items that are eye-catching, quirky or uniquely represent you and your individual style.

FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION
Given the usual location of console tables, it pays to have an element of practicality incorporated into your scheme. Trays are the perfect place for dropping keys but avoid trinket boxes and dishes – these can make your arrangement feel cluttered. Less is more.

ZONE IT
Give your console table a sense of place and purpose by hanging a large mirror or artwork above it – but don’t hang it too high! The centre of your piece should be at eye level.
